Abstract

The Vishakha v. State of Rajasthan (1997) serves as a landmark case for women's rights in the workplace in India. It all started with a social worker, Bhanwari Devi, when she was sexually harassed for standing against child marriage. At that time when there was no law against sexual harassment at work. The Supreme Court stepped in and gave the Vishakha Guidelines, which became the first rules to stop and deal with such harassment. This case not only serves as the basis of gender equality and the dignity of working women, but later became what led to the POSH Act of 2013, and its importance is still relevant in the age when online harassment is prominent.
