Abstract

This paper looks at how legal research design has changed in the age of digitization and why it continues to matter. With most legal materials now available online, researchers can find information faster, but they also face challenges like information overload and the need to judge the reliability of digital sources. The paper explains different research designs and how they work in a digital setting, and it examines how tools such as OCR, NLP, machine learning, and AI are reshaping legal research platforms in India. At the same time, it highlights the limits of technology—such as the risk of losing core analytical skills, reduced human interaction, and unequal access to digital resources. The study argues that while technology improves efficiency and access, strong research design and human judgment remain essential for good legal scholarship.
