Abstract

The landmark judgment in Justice K. S. Puttaswamy v. Union of India (2017) transformed Indian constitutional jurisprudence by recognizing the Right to Privacy as a fundamental right under Articles 14, 19 and 21 of the Constitution. This case commentary examines the background of the dispute, the constitutional issues before the Supreme Court, the reasoning adopted by the nine-judge Bench and the principles laid down in the judgment. It further analyses the decision's significance in protecting individual autonomy, dignity and informational privacy in the digital age. The commentary concludes that Puttaswamy continues to serve as the constitutional foundation for data protection, digital governance and privacy rights in India while shaping future legal responses to emerging technological challenges.
