Abstract

The term "secularism" refers to the separation of religion from the affairs of the state. In the context of the Preamble of the Constitution of India, secularism signifies the fundamental principle that the Indian state is equidistant from all religions and does not promote or discriminate against any particular religion. The Preamble of the Indian Constitution begins with the words "We, the people of India, having solemnly resolved to constitute India into a Sovereign, Socialist, Secular, and Democratic Republic..." These words were added by the 42nd Amendment Act of 1976. Secularism, as a concept, has emerged as a guiding principle in diverse societies around the world. Rooted in the Latin word “saeculum,” meaning worldly or pertaining to the present age, secularism represents the progressive separation of religious institutions and beliefs from the affairs of the state. This profound idea has transformed the socio-political landscapes of nations, promoting tolerance, equality, and coexistence among people of various religious and philosophical backgrounds. Its introduction into the fabric of a society marks a pivotal moment in the evolution of democratic ideals, championing individual freedom while fostering a sense of collective unity.
