Abstract

The police in India are an important part of the criminal justice system. They are the people that citizens meet when they need help from the justice system. The police have to keep people safe, stop crimes from happening, protect people's lives and property, and investigate crimes. How the police do their job affects how well the courts, prosecutors and prisons work.. Over time, people have criticised the police in India for being too controlled by politicians, for being violent when they arrest people, for being corrupt, for not having enough staff, for not being well-trained, for having old laws, for not having good facilities and for not being accountable. The way crime is committed is. This is making it harder for the police to do their job. New types of crime like cybercrime, organised crime, financial fraud, terrorism, human trafficking and crimes that happen across borders need the police to have skills to be good with technology and to work well with other organisations. At the same time, people are more aware of their human rights, and they expect the police to do their job in a fair and transparent way and to respect people's freedom. Many committees, courts and government initiatives have said that the police in India need to be reformed. An important court decision, Prakash Singh v. Union of India, said that the police should be independent and accountable. Recently, new laws like the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita and Bharatiya Sakshya Adhiniyam are trying to modernise the way crimes are investigated and punished by using technology and focusing on the needs of victims. This paper looks at the role of the police in India's criminal justice system, the challenges they face at what is being done to reform the police, and what can be done to make the police more professional, accountable and citizen-friendly and to make them better at using technology.
