Liberty in Crisis-Fundamental Rights During an Emergency

WHEN FREEDOM MEETS FEAR Freedom is often taken for granted until the day it begins to disappear. We live our daily lives speaking our minds, moving freely, practicing our beliefs, and expressing our opinions without constantly thinking about the rights that make these freedoms possible. These protections, knows as Fundamental Rights, are the backbone of a democratic society. But what happens when a nation faces a serious crisis-such as war, armed rebellion, or a threat to national security? Can these rights be limited? Can the government temporarily put liberty on hold? The answer lies in the concept of an Emergency. While emergencies are designed to protect the nation during extraordinary situations, they also raise an important question: how much freedom can a democracy sacrifice in the name of security?
