Abstract

India has emerged as one of the world's major startup ecosystems, with businesses operating across technology, fintech, healthcare, e-commerce, education, food delivery, artificial intelligence & other emerging sectors. While a promising idea and access to capital are important for a startup's growth, legal compliance is equally essential. A startup that ignores its legal obligations at the early stage may face disputes, regulatory penalties, loss of intellectual property, difficulties in raising investment, and even disruption of its business. The legal framework governing startups in India is not contained in a single statute. Instead, startups are governed by various company, tax, IP, labour, contract, data protection, foreign exchange & sector-specific laws.
