Abstract

The gig economy has introduced flexibility and autonomy for most workers, but also opened the door to severe legal issues and labour rights concerns. In India, gig laborers tend to be denied work security, healthcare benefits, and social assurance since of conventional work laws that don't perceive modern kinds of work. This article guides us to understand the nature of gig work, the problems of gig workers, applicable provisions in Indian law, and analyses whether existing laws are adequate to safeguard this emerging segment of workers. It also dives into action initiated by the government, the judiciary, and states such as Rajasthan, and provides practical suggestions to strengthen the legal framework governing gig work.
