Abstract

“One ordinary evening, millions of Indians opened their favourite gaming apps Dream11, My11Circle, RummyCircle, MPL only to be greeted with a shock: cash games were gone. What had become a daily ritual for cricket lovers, card sharks, and prediction pros vanished overnight after the government announced a sweeping ban on all real-money online games. For some, it felt like losing their evening chai adda; for others, it was the sudden end of a side hustle that paid bills. Startups that had built empires around fantasy leagues and poker tables scrambled to switch to free play, while anxious users rushed to withdraw their winnings. In one stroke, India turned a booming digital pastime into a legal battlefield and nobody, from players to companies, seems sure what comes next.”
