Abstract

The Right to Information (RTI) Act, 2005, is a landmark law that promotes transparency, accountability, and citizen empowerment in India. By granting the right to access information from public authorities, it aims to curb corruption and strengthen democratic governance. The Act’s key features—such as time-bound replies, low application fees, proactive disclosure, and oversight by Information Commissions—make it a powerful tool for public participation. Despite its success, the RTI Act faces challenges like delayed responses, low awareness, harassment of activists, and overburdened commissions. Yet, it has transformed governance by empowering citizens, journalists, and civil society to hold officials accountable. Strengthening implementation, protecting users, and promoting digital access can further enhance its impact. Overall, the RTI Act has shifted governance toward greater openness, making transparency a fundamental right of every citizen.
