Abstract

India filed over 749,000 intellectual property applications in FY2024-25 — patents alone crossed the 100,000 mark for the first time ever. The country has leapt from 81st to 39th on the Global Innovation Index in a decade. On paper, it looks like an innovation revolution. But here's the catch: filing a patent isn't the same as creating value. This piece pulls back the curtain on the real story behind India's IP surge — where law meets business strategy, where a trademark can be worth more than a factory, and where a filing boom driven by institutional incentives risks becoming a mirage of innovation rather than the real thing. It's not just about how many rights get granted, but whether anyone actually knows what to do with them once they have them. Because a patent without a strategy is just paperwork — and in India's race to the top of the innovation charts, the lawyers and the managers need to be drafting the future together.
