Abstract

In this research study, the Lok Adalat system—a novel alternative dispute resolution_x000D_ invention in India—is thoroughly examined, with a focus on its revolutionary potential as a_x000D_ "People's Court" inside the larger judicial structure. The old adversarial system's structural_x000D_ problems increasing case backlogs, exorbitant fees, convoluted procedures, and limited_x000D_ access to justice for socioeconomically underprivileged communities led to the creation of_x000D_ Lok Adalats. Originating from panchayat customs at the village level and formalized by the_x000D_ Legal Services Authorities Act of 1987, Lok Adalats have developed into a strong_x000D_ supplemental forum for resolving labour, family, civil, and compoundable criminal problems_x000D_ by encouraging compromise and conciliation._x000D_ The historical and legislative development of Lok Adalats is methodically examined in this_x000D_ study, emphasizing its constitutional responsibility for equal justice and free legal aid under_x000D_ Article 39-A. Their makeup (including State, High Court, District, Taluk, and Permanent Lok_x000D_ Adalats), structure, and procedural flexibility which prioritises equity, voluntariness, and_x000D_ accessibility over rigorous evidentiary or procedural norms are all thoroughly examined. By_x000D_ critically analysing statutory authority and court rulings, the paper clarifies the jurisdiction of_x000D_ Lok Adalat awards, their binding nature, and the protections (and possible weaknesses) for_x000D_ substantive justice and party consent._x000D_ In order to maintain fair, efficient, and inclusive dispute resolution, the paper ends by_x000D_ evaluating the institutional importance of Lok Adalats in achieving the constitutional ideals_x000D_ of justice, equity, and fraternity and making recommendations to strengthen legal aid, adjust_x000D_ procedural safeguards, and collect data-driven evidence. For jurists, legislators, and_x000D_ academics looking to maximize Lok Adalats as a means of democratic access to justice in_x000D_ India's changing legal system, this study attempts to offer insightful, policy-relevant_x000D_ information.
