Abstract
Social media has transformed the way individuals communicate, access information, and express their opinions in the digital age. Platforms such as Instagram, Facebook, WhatsApp, and X (formerly Twitter) have created opportunities for people to share ideas, participate in public discussions, and exercise their right to freedom of speech. In India, this right is protected under Article 19(1)(a) of the Constitution, subject to reasonable restrictions under Article 19(2). This paper examines the relationship between social media and freedom of speech by analyzing both the positive and negative impacts of digital platforms. It highlights how social media promotes communication, education, awareness, and civic participation while also addressing concerns such as misinformation, cyberbullying, mental health issues, and online harassment. The paper further emphasizes the need for responsible and ethical use of freedom of expression in online spaces, drawing reference to the landmark case of *Shreya Singhal v. Union of India* (2015). The study concludes that achieving a balance between freedom of speech and responsible social media usage is essential for creating a safe, informed, and healthy digital environment.
