Abstract

The Indian Constitution stands as a testament to the nation’s journey from colonial subjugation to a vibrant democracy. This article traces the transformation from British rule to the homegrown document adopted in 1950, highlighting the vision of the Constituent Assembly and the influences drawn from various world constitutions. It examines how foundational principles such as justice, liberty, and equality were woven into the text, and how the Constitution has evolved through more than one hundred amendments to address the shifting realities of Indian society. The discussion includes the democratization of governance through local self-government, pivotal judicial interpretations like the basic structure doctrine, and the Constitution’s dynamic response to social, economic, and technological challenges. Ultimately, the study underscores the Constitution’s adaptability and enduring relevance as a living document shaping India’s democratic identity and legal landscape.
