Abstract

The face of crime in India is often painted as masculine, what about the women? In a nation where women are culturally expected to take on domestic chores, female offenders in India blur boundaries and challenge the conventional interpretations related to crime and criminality." This article analyses the female delinquency in India focusing on the factors of crime from the perspective of socio-economic, psychological, and cultural spheres. Even just a decade ago, it was believed that crime is predominantly linked to males with no space for a women’s world. No consideration was ever given to discussing a woman’s criminality. It underlines the woman’s history of being ignored and the history of women’s rights alongside the studies of feminist theory, calling for more attention to female offenders. The article examines various aspects such as age, socio-economic status, socio-educational level, and even psychological factors of women and most of them are found to fall victims to inequality structures along with societal expectations and burdens. It also covers, “What motivates women to break the law, and what measures can be taken to reduce these incidences?” “Is it possible to comprehend the matter of women’s crime without recognizing the impact of suffering, poverty, and social disparity?” “How do women’s image and social constructs affect the feminine crime and how do we change the image of women in crime?” The legal frameworks addressing female criminality, the theories explaining women's criminal behaviour, and the nature of crimes committed by women, ranging from domestic violence to serious offenses like murder and drug trafficking. Case studies illustrate the diverse motivations and circumstances surrounding female offenders. Finally, for a comprehensive approach to prevent female criminality, emphasizing the importance of legal reforms, community-based programs, and addressing gender discrimination to foster a more equitable society.
